If you were looking to reach any and all customers, you will most likely reach none. As a home business owner, you need to identify specific customers, a narrow group - your target market. First, letâs look at what happens when the marketing is too general. Let's say you want to market to others looking for a home based business so your efforts to reach them include "opportunity seekers," or people who want to "make money from home." The problem is, due to the huge numbers of people searching these general terms, the cost of advertising is high and these people are usually not the one's you are really looking for so your marketing dollars are wasted. The good news is, finding people who are looking for what you have to offer and who will become your customers is not difficult or even expensive. It does, however, require you to focus on a particular type of group or smaller segment of the population. Once you narrow your search, you will have a much better chance of these people becoming your customers. Now that you know the importance of narrowing your search, the task at hand is to determine precisely who your target market is. Again, for example, let's say that you are looking to reach others interested in a home based business. From there, find a group within that business. Perhaps mothers or fathers or even a specific company within the industry. The more specific you are, the better. At first it will seem like your target market is too small, like you won't have enough traffic or customers coming into your business. However, just the opposite is true. Because you laser focus your search and reach a specific target, you will see more customers coming into your business and at the same time, spend less money and less effort to get them. Always remember, with any type of advertising and marketing you do, be specific. This is key when discovering your target market.
